Text A: The Price of Being Loved
Some cities are being loved to death. In the old centres of the world's most visited destinations, residents have been priced out by short-term rentals, bakeries have become souvenir shops, and streets designed for a few thousand people now hold tens of thousands every day. Tourism, we are told, brings jobs. But many of these jobs are seasonal, poorly paid and dependent on an industry that can disappear overnight, as the pandemic showed. Cities must set firm limits: caps on visitor numbers, higher tourist taxes and strict controls on holiday rentals. A city that sells itself to everyone eventually belongs to no one.
Text B: Who Gets to Travel?
The current fashion for complaining about "overtourism" has an uncomfortable undertone. For most of history, travel was the privilege of the wealthy; cheap flights and budget accommodation have opened the world to teachers, nurses and students. Proposals to cap visitor numbers or sharply raise taxes would, in practice, restore that privilege, since the rich can always pay more. The real problem is concentration, not tourism itself: millions of people visit the same few streets in the same few weeks. Better management, such as timed entry to popular sites, promotion of less-known regions and investment in local transport, would protect residents without shutting the door on ordinary travellers.

Örnek metin (249 kelime)
Kendi metnini yazdıktan sonra oku. Vurgulu kısımlara dikkat et: numaralar neden işe yaradıklarını açıklıyor.
Both texts accept that the most popular destinations are under strain; where they part company is over who should bear the cost of fixing the problem.1
The first writer contends that unrestricted tourism hollows out cities, replacing residents and everyday shops with rentals and souvenirs, while offering mostly insecure jobs. The solution proposed is firm limits on numbers, rentals and prices. By contrast, the second text maintains that such limits would quietly return travel to the wealthy, and that the problem is concentration rather than volume, which smarter management could ease.
The strength of Text A lies in its attention to residents, whose interests are often treated as secondary to economic growth. However, it rests on the questionable assumption that higher taxes would mainly reduce numbers rather than simply change who visits.2 Text B exposes this blind spot well, yet it offers little evidence that timed entry or regional promotion can handle the scale it describes; spreading visitors may only spread the pressure.
What both texts overlook is the role of housing policy. Controls on short-term rentals, mentioned only briefly in Text A, protect residents without restricting who may travel, and so answer Text B's concern about fairness.3
On balance, I find the second text more persuasive in its diagnosis, but the first more realistic about the need for rules. A more convincing approach might combine Text B's management tools with Text A's limits on rentals, targeting the use of the city rather than the identity of the visitor.
- Introduction identifying the common ground and the disagreement.
- Evaluation: strength and weakness of Text A.
- Original contribution: a gap in both arguments.
