The statement rests on the assumption that looking back and moving forward are opposing motions, as if a society could only face one direction at a time. It is worth distinguishing, however, between nostalgia as a programme and nostalgia as a resource.1
There is considerable force to the claim when nostalgia becomes political. Movements that promise to restore a lost golden age tend to rely on a selective, idealised memory in which past hardships disappear and past injustices are quietly excused. A society persuaded that its best days are behind it may resist reforms simply because they are new, and treat every change as a betrayal of an imagined original.
Yet this view overlooks the extent to which progress has repeatedly drawn on the past.2 The Renaissance was, in large part, an act of looking back. Urban planners now restoring tramlines and walkable streets are, in effect, learning from the cities their grandparents knew. Even in music, revivals of older forms have often produced the most original work of a generation. In such cases, memory supplies a set of tools rather than a destination, and a reminder that the present arrangement is not inevitable.
The danger, then, lies in a society's refusal to examine what it remembers, rather than in the remembering itself.3 Nostalgia that asks "what did we lose, and why?" can sharpen ambitions for the future; nostalgia that asks only "how do we go back?" cannot.
Nostalgia, ultimately, is less a brake than a lens. Whether it clarifies or distorts depends on the honesty with which a society chooses to look through it.
- A precise frame that sets up the thesis.
- Turning point, after the strongest version of the opposing view.
- The qualified thesis, stated precisely.
Öğretmen notları
C2 essays are judged on control and precision as much as ideas. Ask students to underline every abstract noun in their draft and check whether a concrete example supports it.
Discussion point: the model avoids naming specific political movements to stay neutral. Students may use their own examples but should support them carefully.
Ek meydan okuma
Rewrite the introduction for a general newspaper audience in under 70 words.
