More Than Decoration

For much of the twentieth century, city planners treated trees as ornaments: pleasant, inexpensive and, when necessary, removable. A tree that cracked a pavement or blocked a shop sign could be cut down with little debate. That view is now hard to defend. Over the past two decades, urban researchers have measured a remarkable range of services that trees provide, many of which would be expensive or impossible to replace with engineering.

The most immediate is cooling. On a hot afternoon, a street lined with mature trees can be several degrees cooler at ground level than an exposed one nearby, partly because leaves block sunlight and partly because they release water vapour. As heatwaves become more frequent, this shade is increasingly a matter of public health, particularly for older residents, who are most vulnerable to heat.

Trees also manage water. Their canopies intercept rain and their roots help soil absorb it, reducing the volume that rushes into drains during a storm. In cities where drainage systems were built for a cooler, drier climate, this can be the difference between a wet street and a flooded one.

Further benefits are harder to quantify but well documented: trees filter some pollutants from the air, provide habitat for birds and insects, and, according to a growing number of studies, are associated with lower stress and higher property values.

Yet the value of a tree depends heavily on its age. A newly planted sapling provides a fraction of the shade and water absorption of a mature tree, and many young urban trees die within their first few years because they are planted in poor soil and never watered. For this reason, researchers increasingly argue that protecting existing large trees, and caring for new ones until they establish, matters more than headline-grabbing planting targets.

You work for a local council. Write a summary of the article for a briefing paper for councillors, who have no time to read the original. In 120–150 words, present the article's key points and its main recommendation. Do not add your own opinion.
